Old Peppersass, formerly Hero

This was the first cog railway locomotive in the world. Designed to climb steep grades, the boiler was mounted on a gimbal to keep it level. It was used for building the Mt Washington Cog railway and then ran from 1869 till the early 1880s. After retirement the locomotive was displayed in various places around the country but was rescued and rebuilt during the 1920s. A "last run" was planned and amidst great ceremony the locomotive ran once again up the mountain. Unfortunately the day ended in tragedy.

In 1961 Frank and Margaret went on a road trip and stopped to take these pictures of Ol' Peppersass on display.

This must have been a slightly later locomotive, still a vertical boiler but now with a cab.

The other engine is naked Cloud. I could not find any engine naked Cloud on the Wikipedia page anywhere. Do you know where you got that photo from?

Thanks for your comment and info. I've forgotten where that came form, but when I find the book back, I'll add the reference.
