Tacoma to...... Maine.

Modified with the addition of a large fuel tank in the passenger compartment, the plan was to fly this 1923 Fokker C. IV A from Tacoma Washington to Tokyo by flying up the coast and along the Aleutian Islands. The plane flew only about 100 miles when it was forced to land.  It then crashed and the attempt was given up. The damaged aircraft was later consumed by a brush fire.
Eventually it was brought to Owls Head, Maine where it was restored by a trustee of the museum and now flies on a regular basis.

An unusual feature was the method of controlling the cooling of the engine. The side mounted radiators were cranked out into the airstream as needed to provide additional cooling.
