First Train on the Canadian Prairie

Public Archives of Canada
Between 1874 and 1878 the first prairie section of the CPR was built from Pembina, North Dakota to Fort Garry, Manitoba. The locomotive was built in the US, run by rail to North Dakota and barged in on the Red River. Here the train is shown on the occasion of the opening of the line.
