The First Real Automobile

Alfred P. Sloan, Jr.  My Years with General Motors.  New York:  McFadden-Bartell. 1965.
Modified "Sixty" Canstaff Mercedes of 1903 in Newport.  Mercedes made the first real automobile, i.e. a car that was not a buggy, in 1901.  It was also a racer and the first popular sports car, although the expression "sports car" was unknown.  It cost $12,000.  (Original caption)
